Smart building design and construction

Course Description

This course covers the principles and technologies involved in designing and constructing smart buildings. Topics include energy efficiency, IoT-based building management systems, lighting and energy-efficient systems to enhance occupant comfort, safety, and productivity while reducing operational costs and environmental impact. Students will explore how to integrate and manage various smart building systems including lighting, HVAC, security, and energy by case studies of smart buildings with the integration of technologies that allow for real-time monitoring, automation, and efficient resource usage in building.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the fundamental concepts and benefits of smart buildings in terms of occupant comfort, safety, cost efficiency, and environmental impact.
  • Identify and describe key IoT devices and systems used in smart building management, including their applications in real-time monitoring and automation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of building automation platforms by designing a basic automation setup that integrates systems like HVAC, lighting, and security.
